Energy wastage identification

According to the Energy Management Committee and the ISO/CNS 50001 energy management system audit, the university’s total energy consumption in 2023 amounted to 85.95 million kilowatt hours (approximately 309,452 GJ). Energy use was primarily divided among lighting (31%), air conditioning (45%), and laboratory equipment, with the remainder used for other purposes. Smart meter data revealed that the two highest energy-consuming buildings are the Traditional and Biomedical Building (EUI=192) and the Fourth Engineering Building (EUI=117). Due to the specific temperature control requirements for laboratory equipment and biological specimens, air conditioning and lighting in these labs must operate 24/7, leading to substantial energy consumption. To address this challenge, the university has devised improvement plans, including the implementation of AI-controlled air conditioning systems and upgraded lighting to enhance energy efficiency.
