Mong-Hong Chung, Taiwanese film director and the 78th alumnus from our school’s department of Computer Engineering (Now Department of Computer Science) won the 58th Golden Horse Awards for Best Feature Film, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Film Music and Best Actress for his film titled “The Falls”. The film also received 11 nominations at 2021’s Golden Horse Awards.
The Golden Horse judges awarded the Best Original Screenplay Award for “The Falls”, a suspense but moving story about the conflict between a mother with a mental illness and her adolescent daughter, which is thought-provoking and shocking at the same time. As the highly praised Best Feature Film, Chung “challenges the female theme for the first time. Through the mother and daughter’s strained relationship that emerged during their quarantine, the film conveys the problems of modern society, family, mental illness and other aspects. The mother and daughter’s performance in the film accurately expresses the emotional transition of the characters. Finally, once they slowly reconcile upon nearing the end of the pandemic, it also strengthens and empowers the audience to face the real-life situation that everyone’s experiencing right now, and thus a warm and powerful film in this post-epidemic period has been successfully created.”
Director Mong-Hong Chung said in an interview that the filming process of “The Falls” was the least difficult part throughout his film career, but it was the most heart-wrenching film he has ever directed. In the scriptwriting process, he spent a long time understanding schizophrenics to grasp the deep feeling of empathy. Through this story, he wishes that more people will give schizophrenics more tolerance, empathy, and compassion.
