Audiobooks for the Blind — NYCU’s Movement in Continuous Humanistic Care

2021-11-26

To protect the rights of people with visual impairments, the National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University library first devised plans for creating audiobooks in 1998. Following consultations with multiple parties, the library decided to collaborate with six magazine publishers, including CommonWealth Magazine, Crown Magazine, and Evergreen, and recruit volunteers for training in the recording of audiobooks. In 1999, the library began recording audiobooks for students with visual impairment, and the service has since been expanded to include all people with visual impairment. Over the past two decades, the library has created audiobooks containing 15 articles from the latest periodicals each month. The audiobooks are recorded by 40 volunteers and are distributed in CDs or through the NYCU Visual Impairment Audiobook website free of charge. The service has been continually provided for 20 years, with 182 subscribers accessing the latest information on global trends and other news through these audiobooks in 2020.

Articles available on the NYCU Visual Impairment Audiobook website cover the latest news and other diverse topics in various areas, including health, culture, and arts, and are thoroughly enjoyed by visitors to the website. In 2020, the University initiated a project to update the website, with the project expected to be completed by the end of 2021. The new website will be launched through the integration of various resources to promote the service to more users with visual impairments. The goal is to provide a fair, safe, and barrier-free learning environment to people with visual impairments, reduce the cultural gap created through such impairments, offer social support, and uphold the principles of human rights and equality.
