Female Surgeon Undertakes Responsibility for Medical Needs of Green Island

2021-12-01

Dr. Lin Nai-Lu is a government-funded student who graduated from National Yang Ming University (NYMU) in 2012, and she completed her training as a surgical resident in Yang Ming University Hospital on July 31, 2019 (joint training with Taipei Veterans General Hospital). When faced with a choice of which remote area to go to for the second stage of her training, she kept the core value of NYMU’s School of Medicine—putting knowledge into practice—close at heart. Specifically, she sought to use her surgical training at NYMU Hospital and National Veterans General Hospital in service of society. Thus, in August 2019, she headed to Green Island Township Public Health Center in Taitung County, a remote township lacking in medical resources.

The lack of transportation infrastructure and medical resources were big challenges. At times, Dr. Lin doubted whether she, a fresh graduate from medical school, could meet such a challenge of practicing medicine in Green Island. However, Dr. Lin’s experience of severe throat trauma many years ago gave her the courage to press on. Specifically, Dr. Lin underwent an upper airway stenosis and multiple throat reconstruction operations due to the trauma, which was a source of worry among her family members, particularly with regard to whether she could function independently following her injury. Despite such adversity, she plucked herself up and committed to serving Green Island as a medical practitioner. Her transformation from someone who could barely speak while lying on a hospital bed to a knowledgeable doctor in service of others was indeed something to behold for her family members.
