New Green Spaces at Dingpu Canal Pedestrian Path

2021-06-24

Guangfu, Boai, Liuja, and Tainan campuses of National Chiao Tung University (hereafter NCTU) provide people with access through public walkways. With the goal of “ecological commons,” the Boai campus collaborated with the Hsinchu City government and top industrial design teams in opening up and connecting the water channels of the canal according to feedback from local residents and the faculty and students of NCTU. As an open campus, the Boai campus has opened up its green space at an appropriate scale. The 143-m wall has been removed, accessible spaces have been constructed, and nearly 2,500 m2 of campus space has been opened to be shared with the public, defining the large public open space in NCTU.

The 2019 collaboration between NCTU and the Hsinchu City government, the Dingpu Canal  Student Pedestrian Path Project, is a key to guiding pedestrian flows from the old town to Hsinchu Park and 18 Peak Mountain. The Student Pedestrian Path also connects the six campuses of NCTU. Before the project was commenced, the path along the canal was blocked by ground objects from neighboring communities. After the county government negotiated and communicated with multiple involved parties, the citizens voluntarily removed the ground objects, and NCTU also plans to remove the southern wall of the Boai campus to connect the key 600-m joint. Once the project is completed, an 1.4-km urban green corridor from Xuefu Road to Baoshan Road along Dingpu Canal will be in place, completing the pedestrian environment from Hsinchu Park and 18-Peak Mountain. The connected path between Hsinchu Park and Dingpu Canal will improve the aesthetics of the NCTU campus environment, the natural canal, and the daily life of students and neighborhoods, and a friendly campus and neighborhood environment enabling comfortable living can be established.
