The NYCU Center for Institutional Research and Data Analytics, with 7-Eleven and Unity Sustainability Service invited as co-organizers, held an activity called the Youth SDGs Workshop. The SDGs (a.k.a Sustainable Development Goals) workshop which features enriching courses, enterprise case sharing, and SDGs board game, provided the participating faculty members and students with a wider understanding of Sustainable Development Goals.
Though the number of participants was limited by the pandemic, more than 60 lecturers and students from our campus were still gathered to join the activity. The speakers from Unity Sustainability Service explained the context of 17 SDGs of the United Nations to our participants from the 5P concepts (People, Prosperity, Planet, Peace, and Partnership). They also explained that when the world begins facing extreme climate, by starting to adjust our dietary behavior and daily practices, we can have a positive impact on the environment.
Derived from the idea of “Planet Sustainability in Our Everyday Life”, 7-Eleven came out with a series of innovative services, including the iLove Food program, new-launched vegetarian foods, and bring-your-own-cup discounts. They had been listed on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index and Dow Jones Emerging Markets Index for the third consecutive year. In addition to introducing their corporate concept of ESG (Environmental, Social & Governance) and practical implementation of sustainable development accomplishments they have made, they also appealed to the participants to practice environmental sustainability actions together.
The Unity Sustainability Service indulged the participants with a board game they developed based on the 3 aspects of ESG and the UN SDGs, providing them a deeper understanding of those aspects and goals. According to the students, through the game, they have understood that it takes cooperation and resource sharing with professionals from different fields to achieve environmental sustainability. Meanwhile, the time limitation of the board game also indicates that the issue of sustainability is on the watch, which requires the joint efforts of all human beings.
Through this activity, it can be believed that the participating students and faculty members have a better understanding of the SDGs, and would like to dig deeper into the related issues. It is hoped that in the future, everyone can make substantial contributions to the environment by taking practical actions.
