Community Medicine Research Center Achieves Outstanding Smoking Prevention Outcomes

2021-12-01

In the past decade, Taiwan’s government has been striving to promote the tobacco hazards prevention. Currently, comprehensive service and supportive measures are in place for smoking cessation. With the beginning of second generation of smoking cessation services, the number of participating medical institutions and personnel has significantly increased compare to previous generation. By the end of November 2020, the service involved 3,894 contracted medical institutions. In 2021, the Community Medicine Research Center will continue to assist the government in promoting smoking cessations services. Through this, the center has increased the therapeutic quality of smoking cessation services, provided references for establishing government policies, prompted institutions to collaborate in smoking cessation services, and improved resource use efficiency.

In the future, the center will analyze and amend current smoking cessation policies established by the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Tobacco hazard prevention is important in public health policy; in addition to highlighting the risks of tobacco-related products and establishing no-smoking zones in public venues, the government should establish no-smoking policies to protect high-risk groups and nonsmokers. The key points for promoting smoking cessation are (1) prohibiting the promotion of tobacco-related products; (2) establishing control measures for tobacco products; (3) increasing investigations of smuggled and disqualified tobacco products; and (4) enforcing tobacco taxes. Since the impact of a single strategy is rather limited, the government should establish tobacco control measures through multiple channels to lower its adverse effects on society.
