Deputy Executive Director Sheng-Yang Huang of the TCVGH Smart Healthcare Committee demonstrates the Medical Record Agent’s automatic completion of medical record summaries.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, the shortage of medical manpower has significantly worsened, posing a serious challenge for hospitals worldwide. Taichung Veterans General Hospital (TCVGH) announced on April 18th that their collaboration with National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) resulted in the development of ‘Healthcare GPT.

This AI-powered tool optimizes various medical processes, from writing medical records to accessing databases and responding to patient emails, thereby swiftly reducing manual workload. It is estimated to save over 60,000 minutes of administrative time each month, alleviating burdens on healthcare staff and enabling more precise clinical decision-making.

Healthcare GPT: Reducing Time Costs with Four Major Applications

TCVGH Director Shih-Ann Chen announced that, in collaboration with NYCU, over 20 professionals have devoted a year to developing Healthcare GPT, covering four major application areas. These include the ‘Medical Record Agent,’ which utilizes advanced natural language processing technology to generate medical record summaries within a mere 15 seconds automatically. Additionally, there are features such as the ‘Call Center AI Consultation System, ‘Email Composer,’ and ‘KM Agent,’ facilitating multitarget responses to public inquiries, processing complaint emails, and swiftly retrieving internal meeting records and organizing decision-related matters, thereby streamlining non-core medical tasks.

In the past, when doctors conducted consultations and obtained the latest medical conditions from patients, they had to jot down key points and then rely on memory to transcribe the medical records. However, now it’s not so troublesome anymore. With Healthcare GPT, it can be done in just 15 seconds. As a result, clinical operations will no longer be entangled with tedious paperwork, allowing doctors to redirect time costs back into their professional domains, significantly enhancing medical efficiency.

Furthermore, Healthcare GPT serves as the ultimate assistant for healthcare personnel. The system can autonomously recognize the voice of callers and promptly generate accurate response texts within the same 15-second timeframe. This allows staff to choose responses for callers, eliminating unfamiliarity and significantly reducing wait times while alleviating the burden on on-duty personnel searching for information.

Enhancing Overall Healthcare Service Quality through the Integration of Artificial Intelligence and Medical Expertise

The ‘Healthcare GPT’ developed through the collaboration between TCVGH and NYCU surpasses conventional text generation. Tailored specifically for the professional medical field, it operates smoothly even within on-site private cloud hardware environments, eliminating data leakage and privacy infringement concerns.

This collaborative development not only represents a significant breakthrough in the fields of healthcare and artificial intelligence but also demonstrates the steadfast commitment of TCVGH and NYCU to advancing technological innovation and enhancing the quality of healthcare services. By combining artificial intelligence with medical expertise, personalized and more efficient medical services can be provided to patients while offering powerful support tools for healthcare professionals.
