Mr. Hsu Wanchuan was so grateful for the dedicated medical care he received from alumni of National Yang-Ming University (NYMU; which merged with National Chiao Tung University and became National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University on February 1, 2021) that he donated one Taiwan cow-tail fir with an NYMU alumnus from the 1989 Class of the Department of Medicine to NYMU. On January 19, 2021, the tree was planted by NYMU’s President Kuo Hsu-Sung, NCTU President Lin Chi-Hung, and multiple alumni as special guests. The tree-planting ceremony was simple but warm. Taiwan cow-tail fir (Keteleeria davidiana var. formosana Hayata) is endemic to Taiwan; together with Taiwan date palm, Taiwan catkin yew, and Taitung cycad, they are known as Taiwan’s Four Wonderous Trees. Taiwan cow-tail fir is a glacial relict. Since the ice age, this tree survived the process of natural selection for tens of millions of years. In the past, it was listed as a precious and rare plant under the protection of Taiwanese law, but, as a result of sufficient genetic resources that have protected the species, strict protection is no longer necessary.

The Triangular Park has been part of a beautification project since the summer of 2020. The original flower bed and the three Madagascar almond trees that failed to thrive were removed, and three stalks of NYMU’s school flower, the blue jacaranda, were planted. Blue jacarandas blossom in late spring and early summer, presenting beautiful and elegant petals and intricate pinnately compound leaves. Taiwan cow-tail fir is an evergreen arbor, with a pleasing shape and dense foliage, that can reach a height of 30 to 40 m. This and the blue jacarandas symbolize the blossoming future of National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University.
