Gifting Books to Create a Circular Knowledge Economy

2023-03-29

The Library has long received donations of books and periodicals, both new and used from organizations or the general public. In addition to adding these donations to the collection for more readers to read, the Libraries also distribute duplicate books or magazines to readers who need them. For example, the periodicals section on the 3rd floor and the diverse learning section on the 2nd floor of NYCU’s Chiaotung Campus Library put out books occasionally for readers to take home. Also, during the annual library week event, the librarians also choose books in good condition with interesting themes from the large number of donated books to give away. The 2021 Library Week held an event titled “Book Adoption – Our Circular Economy, Our Shared Knowledge,” which was embraced enthusiastically by readers as in previous years. A total of 882 books and periodicals were given out in the event, extending their circular value and reducing waste and recycling loads. This allowed readers who cannot purchase books due to financial stress or other reasons to have their own book collection, retaining their right to access and obtain knowledge that will help them to improve their situation.
