Bilingual education fosters globally competitive talents in the next generation

2023-11-09

In accordance with the 2030 bilingual policy and the 10 years plan “One Work, Manifold Rewarded” of NYCU to create a bilingual institution, we have established the Office of Bilingual Education (OBE). Our aim is to provide high-quality and equal educational opportunities to local students from different regions and backgrounds through English-medium bilingual courses. We aim to strengthen their professional and cross-disciplinary English communication skills and improve their international mobility and competitiveness in the global job market. The bilingual learning environment also attracts outstanding international students and promotes a collaborative learning environment where local and international students can immerse themselves in language and multicultural exchange. With English as the common language, bilingual education provides opportunities for international academic institutions and scholars to work with our university for cross-institutional international cooperation, promoting the development of innovative and interdisciplinary expertise in line with international standards.

In accordance with the goals of optimizing and promoting equal education, NYCU’s OBE works with the relevant departments within our university to plan and provide a diverse English learning environment for the entire campus. This initiative aims to enhance students’ overall, professional and academic English language abilities. In 2022, the Guang Fu Campus hosted a total of 3 EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction) teacher sharing sessions with a total attendance of 61 participants. There were 8 events to enhance student participation in EMI-related activities, with a total attendance of 244 participants, as well as 2 TA (Teaching Assistant) workshops attended by a total of 32 participants. In addition, at the Yang Ming Campus, the LLWC (Language Learning and Writing Center) organized 13 English writing courses with a total of 571 participants. They also organized 7 events to improve English-related activities, with a total of 81 participants, and 3 workshops attended by a total of 351 participants.
