[Dec 03 (Tue) Lecture in Mandarin] Gender, Power, and Knowledge: How Feminist Theory Illuminates the Connections Between Body, Mind, and World|Ting-Wei Chang|Gender OPEN MIC, Open Your Mind|LACSPEC

A-Wei’s morning begins with a mirror. At the vanity table, ze carefully shapes hir brows and selects a lipstick that matches hir mood. Smiling at hir reflection, ze thinks, “This should boost my confidence.” Yet a voice within asks, “Is this really my choice? What if I went to work bare-faced?”

During lunch, colleagues discuss gym routines and the latest dieting trends. A-Wei silently counts hir calorie intake. Despite no health concerns, ze feels hir body needs “fixing” to meet some arbitrary “standard of beauty.” But who defines this standard?

That evening, ze slips into a new dress and twirls before the mirror. Ze wonders if this is truly hir preferred style. Should ze have opted for something more “neutral”? Ultimately, ze decides that embracing a more “feminine” look might align better with societal expectations. Is this outfit a free choice, or is it shaped by unseen rules?

How many choices in daily life are unnoticed, yet deeply influenced by gender norms, societal expectations, and structures of domination? A-Wei’s day mirrors many of ours. Makeup, dieting, fashion—what seems trivial carries profound implications.

In this seminar, A-Wei Chang will guide us through everyday experiences, using feminist theory to interrogate the authenticity of these “choices.” Together, we’ll reexamine the links between body, mind, and world to uncover answers uniquely our own.

🌍 Seminar Highlights:

Reflect on the truth behind daily acts like makeup and dieting: voluntary or dictated by norms?
Gain insights into radical feminism and its critique of structures of domination.
Discover how feminist theory helps us break societal molds and embrace genuine freedom.
