NYCU’s Southeast Asia International Volunteer Team Creates Taiwan’s Eastern Environmental Education Space & Remote Design Service Workshop to serve Cambodia

2023-11-09

In 2022, the Service Learning Center of National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, under the guidance of Southeast Asia International Volunteer Team, collaborated with Xinglong Elementary School in Donghe Township, Taitung County, on a project called “Yi Zhu.” During the summer, they carried out the “Yi-Zhu” operation, which lasts for one and a half week, focusing on the design and cooperative construction as their main goal of public services. This activity is conducted by Professor Hsu Pei-Hsien from the Institute of Architecture and students from various departments of the university worked together within Xinglong Elementary School in Donghe Township, Taitung County, to create a teaching demonstration area suitable for environmental sustainability education, using methods such as wooden and metal structures.

After creating such a space, the elementary school will be able to engage in a more direct and more concrete, allowing students to observe the natural principles of rainwater collection and the recycling processes. This will help them develop a greater appreciation for natural resources. Furthermore, the Southeast Asia International Volunteer Team continues to serve Cambodian youth through online workshops, providing education in digital design. Cambodian youth use remote teaching by the Southeast Asia International Volunteer Team, gain knowledge of contemporary Southeast Asian architectural forms, using 3D modeling software to understand spatial structures, and ultimately design their own dream spaces. This not only expands their horizons, but also inspires their interest in aesthetics and design, as well as practical experience.

Through the actions of the Southeast Asia International Volunteer Team, our university has effectively implements the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequality), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) in the context of public services.
