Creating opportunities for disadvantaged students to pursue higher education

2023-11-09

In order to provide more opportunities for disadvantaged students to improve their situations through higher education, NYCU’s undergraduate program offers a “Tun-Meng Group” through individual application admissions, which provides a different admission screening mechanism for disadvantaged students. This includes lowering the standards for the entrance exam, simplifying the selection process, reducing registration fees, and providing transportation and accommodation assistance for the entrance exam. All these measures aim to increase the chances of admission for disadvantaged students. We hope that through education, we can mitigate the inequality in educational resources caused by poverty and urban-rural inequality and create a new opportunity for talent development in higher education.

Our school’s objectives for the admission of disadvantaged students includes those facing economic and cultural disadvantages, such as low-income households, middle-low-income households, children from families with special circumstances, indigenous students, new immigrants and their children, and students with disabilities and their children, all of whom meet the criteria for disadvantaged scholars. In 2022, almost all school’s departments participated in the disadvantaged student admissions program, with a total of 28 departments. These departments were divided into nine groups based on their admission characteristics, including the Electrical and Computer Engineering Group, Engineering Group, Natural and Biomedical Sciences Group, Management Group, Humanities and Social Sciences Group, Medicine Group, Dentistry Group, Healthcare License Group, and Biomedical Science Group. Together they offered 79 admission slots, representing 7.7% of the total undergraduate admission slots allocated by the school.

In addition to the disadvantaged student admissions pathway, there are also public-funded students from remote islands, indigenous communities, and rural areas supported by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health and Welfare, as well as students with disabilities who are admitted through a joint allocation process. Furthermore, economically and culturally disadvantaged students entering our school through other general admission channels are also supported. In addition to the apply of tuition and accommodation fee waivers, as well as scholarships and other financial assistance, various forms of academic learning and career guidance assistance measures are also offered. The goal is to ensure that disadvantaged students studying in our school have sufficient learning resources.
