Oct 5 (Sat) – RPG Game: Hunger Games Refugee Survival: Refugee Survival Workshop

[Oct 5 (Sat) – RPG Game: Hunger Games Refugee Survival: Refugee Survival Workshop | BridgeIRS | SDGX-4 Disaster/Refugee Series | LACSPEC]

When war breaks out, as the head of your family, you must lead 15 family members to escape your homeland.
After crossing the border, you’ll face a series of challenges—how will you choose?
Will you move forward together, taking as many people as possible, or prioritize those closest to you so they can go further?

Following last semester’s SDGs series, “Sustainable Memo Before the Next Round of Crisis,” SPEC is honored to collaborate with BridgeIRS, an international refugee service organization dedicated to promoting human rights on the frontlines of refugee camps. BridgeIRS offers assistance in education, health, and economic support, helping to uphold human dignity in extreme conditions.

In this Refugee Survival Workshop, you’ll “experience” the harrowing realities of refugees escaping conflict. The RPG simulation includes scenes of constant hunger, disease, lack of education, government corruption, and homelessness. Every stage of the experience places participants in the difficult choices refugees must face, allowing you to feel the unpredictability of life during wartime.

Led by Dr. YC Chen, Project Manager at BridgeIRS, the RPG workshop will also feature guest speakers Dr. Bo-Yao Huang and Dr. Jing-Wen Lin from Cathay General Hospital’s Geriatrics Department. Both doctors participated in BridgeIRS’ overseas refugee service mission in the Middle East this year.
After the workshop, we will engage in an in-depth discussion on the struggles refugees endure and reflect on our roles as global citizens. How can we respond to the real-life situations faced by refugees today?

Upcoming Series Events

This semester’s SPEC SDGs series theme is “Sustainable Memo Before the Next Round of Crisis.”
Unlike the usual focus on a single SDG, we will explore what an unsustainable future might look like. When society faces inequality, political instability, or environmental unsustainability, it leads to wars, human rights abuses, hunger, poverty, and pandemics—creating various types of “disasters/refugees” (from wars, climate, politics, etc.). By exploring these crises, we realize that SDG action is not only about the distant future, but about being as prepared as possible before these storms destroy everything.
