The Jullay International Volunteer Team consists of student volunteers from National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University and bases its operation mainly in Jamyang School, a boarding school located in Ladakh, India, in the foothills of the Himalayas. Since 2010, the team has provided volunteer services offering free education to children from financially disadvantaged families. During summer vacation each year, the team provides digital resources for students to engage in autonomous learning, with the goal of alleviating educational inequality through diverse and convenient digital technology.
Under the current global pandemic, the Jullay Team utilizes the technological and digital resources of the University and its rich experience in establishing long-term collaboration with India to offer services in Taiwan. Team members work alongside the information technology volunteer team from National Changhua Senior High School to provide programming education in TaCheng Junior High School in Changhua County during winter and summer vacations. This allows the junior high school students to develop digital application skills, acquire popular science knowledge, and participate in diverse hands-on scientific experiments.
The digital logic course provided by the volunteers introduces App Inventor 2 to the students, assisting them in developing their own smartphone games using digital logic concepts. In the future, information technology courses incorporating tabletop gaming will be implemented for students to learn logic programming, thereby reducing the gap in educational resources between urban and rural areas. The service project also aims to foster students’ ability to perform self-directed learning and develop digital logic skills after school, allowing them to learn at their own pace after the project has ended.
By using digital approaches, the Jullay Team continue to devise plans and promote online fundraising for students in Jamyan School. The members also collaborate with the Formosa Budding Hope Association to collect donations for these students to further their education, helping them gain valuable knowledge and leave poverty behind.
