Changhua County government, NYCU, Quanta Computer, and Chunghwa Telecom have signed a memorandum of cooperation (MoC) to promote smart agriculture. Hence, the Smart Agriculture Promotion Center was officially opened. Changhua County Mayor Huei-Mei Wang, Quanta-NYCU Joint AI Research Center Director Jason Yi-Bing Lin, Quanta Computer Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Vice President (VP) Ted Chang, Chunghwa Telecom Southern Taiwan Business Group VP K. H. Liang, have just signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) for “Industry-Government-Academia Cooperation in smart agriculture promotion” on 4th October 2021 along with farmers representatives and as the witnesses.
Changhua County Mayor Huei-Mei Wang said that smart agriculture is inevitable, as it can solve the lack of agricultural labor due to the aging rural population and also bolster/assist in the prevention of agricultural disasters.
The construction of smart environments around the farms and greenhouses helps the farmer to monitor the temperature, humidity, wind direction, etc just by looking at the device display. Farmers are not only able to automate the watering schedule and fertilization, but also minimize damage to the crops caused by strong winds by using the net to redirect the wind. A clam-like device could also help reduce crop failures by constantly monitoring the water salinity in aquaponics and ponds.
