Glove Puppetry Digital Museum is an online cultural heritage platform that incorporates the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The objective of the museum is to promote social cohesion, cultural participation, and the accumulation of cultural knowledge. The digital museum also aims to provide education that can promote the continual and long-term cultivation of cultural talents and enhance their employability.
Artifacts should bring warmth and have therapeutic effects. Instead of putting them in display cases in museums far away from public reach, artifacts should be widely accessible to the public such that the people can benefit from their presence. National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) plays a crucial role in the international cultural community. After receiving more than 2,000 artifacts from the Seden Society Puppet Theater Foundation in 2019, NYCU began establishing the Glove Puppetry Digital Museum by applying digital technology and the internet to overcome the spatial limitations of physical museums and upgrade museum collections, displays, education, and public services. The establishment of the museum involved the digital archiving and cataloguing of glove puppetry’s artefacts as well as historical chronology, construction of a 3D virtual museum website, and conducting of research on glove puppetry artists and puppet theaters nationwide. The digital platform aims to offer diversified learning that is not limited by geographical boundaries, thereby enriching the spiritual life of the public, promoting the sustainable development of cultural industries and employment, and fulfilling the university’s social responsibilities.
