In recent years, National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) has been actively recruiting talented students from various countries by offering joint-degree programs, scholarships, internships, and employment opportunities. In 2019, the number of international students in the university reached 1,783, comprising 13.6% of all students. Of these students—hailing from more than 60 countries—1,222 were degree students and 561 were non-degree students. Accordingly, NCTU is the only university in Taiwan to pass The Higher Education’s internationalization quality inspection conducted by the Ministry of Education; it also received the high distinction certificate.
In response to the needs of international students, NCTU continues to increase the ratio of English-taught courses and strives to establish a bilingual campus. The university offers free Chinese learning courses to foreign students, guides them to establish student clubs or associations, hosts student union events, and oversees the buddy program. In addition, NCTU has constructed venues and a restaurant for students with specific religious beliefs, including prayer rooms as well as dormitory kitchens designed specifically for Muslim students, enabling them to prepare permissible food according to Islamic law. Water sprayers are also installed in several restrooms of the library and information service center, enabling Muslim students to perform ablution before prayer. Such measures generate a culturally friendly campus environment for foreign students with different customs.
In 2019, NCTU invited Indu Rasoi, an Indian restaurant, to establish a food stall in the student cafeteria, enabling students from India to enjoy and reminisce about their traditional food.
In addition to continually improving the dormitory and cafeteria and establishing a friendly environment for students of diverse cultures, the university pays attention to the mental well-being of foreign students and provides them with counseling services, helping them manage mental stress and emotional problems.
