In response to the government’s New Southbound Policy, the International College of Semiconductor Technology of National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) introduced an overseas master’s program in Vietnam in collaboration with Hanoi University of Science of Vietnam National University (VNU-HUS). Students were recruited for the first term of the “International College of Semiconductor Technology – Overseas special master’s program in Vietnam” in the 2020 academic year, making NCTU the first university in Taiwan to offer an overseas special master’s program in the semiconductor field.
Through this master’s program, NCTU will enhance cooperation and exchanges between the two universities in research related to the advanced semiconductor field, and strengthen the connections with local Vietnamese semiconductor companies to enable Vietnamese students to join the semiconductor training system in Taiwan. At the initial stage, the program expects to recruit 30 overseas master students every year.
Vietnamese students of the overseas special master’s program can benefit from Taiwan’s quality teaching practices in higher education and obtain a graduation certificate of NCTU, a prominent Taiwanese university, without going abroad. NCTU will also arrange for outstanding students to travel to Taiwan for summer internships. In addition to having access to advanced instruments and equipment in their advisors’ laboratories, these students can hopefully do internships in the semiconductor industry in Taiwan.
A representative from NCTU stated that globalization has resulted in the international free flow of human resources. The collaboration between NCTU and VNU-HUS and the establishment of the semiconductor industry overseas special master’s program will cultivate semiconductor elites and foster international semiconductor talents for Taiwan and Vietnam, creating a mutually beneficial situation.
