[NYCU SDGs Project] Zero Waste Recycling Rooftop Farms

2022-09-20

After 14 years of research and development, Jehng-Jung Kao, a professor of NYCU Institute of Environment Engineering, finished the first zero waste recycling rooftop farms, which can be easily built on balconies and rooftops. The values of this project align with the core values of the following SDGs: SDG 2: Zero Hunger, SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production, and SDG 13: Climate Action.

The team designed standardized potted plants and used recycled bottles to save the raindrops for growing plants. They also led the water to the soil layer so that they don’t have to water the plants that often. The vegetables can be collected after 20-35 days depending on the season.

In addition that the water in the recycling bottles can make vegetables grow, and the leftover at home can be discarded in the worm-rearing box which was invented by the team and becomes organic worm fertilizer.

Professor Kao has also been promoting the project to schools at all levels, making teachers lead their students to grow plants from seeds. Not only can they save some cost, but can also learn  planting techniques and observe the growing condition at the same time.
