To ensure the core competitiveness of future Taiwanese generations in programming, NYCU collaborated with the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the technology industry leader in Taiwan, to host a charity event. This unique industry-academia technological cooperation project was a 1-day Tech Education Camp. For this event, the NYCU Service-Learning Center matched NYCU students from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering with volunteers from Fab 12B of TSMC for technological innovation education. Teachers and students from Nan-Liao Primary School were invited to participate in the programming-oriented tabletop game experiential camp, which was held on April 24 at the Chiaotung Campus of NYCU. Student volunteers from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering learned the concept of programming by playing a tabletop game Coding Ocean, which featured pirates fighting for treasure across the world as its core narrative. The unplugged game was used to guide students, allowing them to experience the fun of programming through a step-by-step process.
During the Tech Education Camp, in addition to playing the programming-oriented tabletop game in the morning, students visited the TSMC Museum of Innovation in the afternoon, where the TSMC volunteers served as tour guides. The tour guides provided the students with in-depth and simple explanations on the application of integrated circuits in daily living and the unlimited potential of TSMC in driving technological evolution through innovation.
The NYCU Service-Learning Center launched its service-learning courses in 2007 to fulfill the social responsibilities of NYCU and integrate learning with social needs, thereby enabling students to provide feedback to society during their research and learning journey. Through learning by doing, students can establish lifelong core competencies such as independent thinking, communication, teamwork, problem-solving, self-management, leadership, and team coordination.
Through this visit and hands-on experience, the students from Nan-Liao Primary School familiarized themselves with technological applications during this technology experiential camp, and this event enhanced the relationship between Nan-Liao Primary School, NYCU, and TSMC on the basis of co-learning and the common good. The students and volunteers also benefited considerably from learning through the step-by-step learning process in the game, and they left the event with a great sense of satisfaction. Guided by the principle of giving back to society, the students from NYCU and the volunteers from Fab 12B experienced a sense of achievement in helping others, and they became motivated to continue contributing to society and participating in education and innovation. They expressed their intention to continue participating in university cooperation activities aimed at fulfilling the social responsibilities of NYCU and TSMC.
