During the summer of 2020, the Liching Club—based at Yang Ming Campus of National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU)—traveled to Qatu Village of Nantou County for its tenth consecutive year of offering medical services and raising awareness of local issues regarding medical and health care, childhood education, culture, and community development. By partnering with local health officials, the club’s medical service team provided residents with health education and referrals, thereby helping to establish healthy living habits. The long-term and stable program and the club’s robust relationship with local residents have strengthened the residents’ confidence in the club’s medical service team and substantially improved the effectiveness of health promotion efforts.
The Qatu tribe is the earliest tribe to be relocated to Nantou County’s Ren-Ai Township. Ninety percent of the township’s residents are Bunun people, and NYCU students have experienced the importance of preserving indigenous cultures from the beginning. Therefore, in addition to attending indigenous language classes as part of their semester training, members of the Liching Club incorporated cultural heritage activities into their camp itinerary. These traditional activities include hunting and rice husking will encourage the local children’s understanding and appreciation of their tribe and culture.
