Environment and Aesthetics Converge: “2023 Island Bamboo Innovative Architecture Exhibition” dazzles at NYCU

2024-03-01

With the rise of sustainable development principles, the architecture industry is increasingly inclined towards seeking environmentally friendly and aesthetically pleasing solutions. Against this backdrop, the third edition of the Bamboo Construction Talent Training Program initiated by the Taiwan Bamboo Association presents the “2023 Island Bamboo Innovative Architecture Exhibition” at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) with grandeur. Utilizing bamboo as the primary building material, the exhibition showcases architecture’s beauty and underscores its practicality in environmental conservation.

Bamboo Construction Trends: Exploring Environmental Innovations in Modern Architecture

  • The 2023 Island Bamboo Innovative Architecture Exhibition is spearheaded by Pei-Hsian Hsu, Chairman of the Taiwan Bamboo Association and Director of the Graduate Institute of Architecture at NYCU, with architect Yu-Hsin Yeh serving as the curator. This exhibition explores the potential applications of bamboo construction in modern society. Through the innovative use of bamboo, visitors will appreciate the unique beauty of bamboo-inspired architecture.
  • This year’s architecture exhibition focuses on creating small-scale bamboo structures that balance practicality, social considerations, aesthetics, and weather resistance, aiming to demonstrate the adaptability of bamboo construction in modern life. Additionally, the exhibition invites emerging architects from the industry to utilize various design approaches, integrating space, structure, materials, and construction techniques to craft innovative bamboo structures.
International Collaboration in Bamboo Construction: Experience the Beauty of Bamboo with  “Jhu Syuan Huan Jyu”
  • At the NYCU exhibition area, there will be a total of five bamboo structures, including the “Jhu Syuan Huan Jyu” (竹旋幻居, Bamboo Spiral Dwelling), designed by Kristof Crolla, Assistant Professor and architect from the University of Hong Kong’s Department of Architecture.
  • The bamboo structure of this building is prefabricated and trial-assembled by “PT Bamboo Pure” in Bali, then assembled by a team in Taiwan. Through augmented reality (AR) technology, the construction techniques of the Indonesian team are faithfully reproduced, ensuring precision in every detail.
  • The “Jhu Syuan Huan Jyu (Bamboo Spiral Dwelling)” carries a poetic name and symbolizes the cyclic nature and transplantation of architecture. It invites viewers to experience the charm of bamboo-inspired architecture together, showcasing the fusion of art and technology in bamboo construction. Moreover, it challenges the concept of using digital technology and international collaboration, paving the way for the global bamboo construction market.
  • The “2023 Island Bamboo Innovative Architecture Exhibition” is indeed an architectural feast and an exploration of environmental protection and sustainable development. The exhibition brings bamboo construction into urban areas, thereby opening a new chapter in the development of Taiwan’s architecture and bamboo industry.
The bamboo structure, “Jhu Syuan Huan Jyu(竹旋幻居),” is presented on the flood control terrace of the Guangfu campus at NYCU, showcasing the beauty of bamboo architecture.
