Achievements of NYCU’s Digital Campus: Emphasizing Environmental Sustainability and Achieving Net-Zero Carbon Emissions

2023-12-27

The university campuses are keeping pace with environmental sustainability. After signing the net-zero emission declaration earlier this year, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) has officially implemented an intelligent energy-saving mechanism. Utilizing artificial intelligence, we are integrating the management of campus streetlights and air conditioning systems, showcasing our commitment to environmental sustainability through tangible actions.

This Year’s NYCU Digital Campus Achievement Exhibition Shines with a Major Emphasis on Sustainable Development and Artificial Intelligence.

  • On December 26th, NYCU showcased its digital campus achievements at the NYCU Library, highlighting sustainable development and artificial intelligence as significant milestones. This year, the introduction of intelligent streetlights managed through artificial intelligence oversees more than 1,200 lights across the Taipei and Hsinchu campuses. Utilizing sunrise and sunset times provided by the Central Weather Administration, the system controls the flickering times of campus streetlights, preventing inconvenience and energy waste caused by premature or delayed lighting changes during different seasons. Simultaneously, the most energy-consuming air conditioning systems have implemented optimized energy-saving algorithms, projecting a potential 30% reduction in air conditioning energy consumption.
  • In addition to addressing the requirements for streetlights and air conditioning infrastructure, we are also addressing the high demand for computer computation in teaching and research. Adhering to service-sharing and energy efficiency principles, we have introduced NVIDIA’s GPUs featuring an energy-efficient service-sharing architecture. This enables the sharing of computational resources among multiple laboratories, ensuring energy savings in meeting computational demands.
  • The Office of General Affairs emphasized that energy-saving and carbon reduction measures have consistently been a crucial focus. In alignment with the president’s declaration to achieve net-zero carbon emissions, the office plans to initiate a greenhouse gas inventory for the university next year to assess the school’s carbon footprint. This initiative aims to facilitate further planning to reduce carbon emissions. Explicitly addressing the high energy consumption of air conditioning systems, the office employs AI technology for control and implements energy-efficient measures with a Level 1 energy-saving label to reduce electricity consumption.
  • Additionally, a cloud-based energy management system is employed for real-time monitoring of building electricity usage, ensuring that the Energy Use Intensity (EUI) of the buildings is maintained at reasonable levels.

NYCU to Continuously Develop Smart Campus Environment, Aiming for Campus Digital Transformation

  • Vice President Ta-Sung Lee stated that in the second phase of the in-depth project, President Chi-Hung Lin directed the implementation of the “Digital Transformation-Driven University Governance” initiative. This endeavor focuses on three key aspects: foundational environmental construction, data integration and service platforms, and innovative application service development. The initiative aims to explore various potential applications of emerging digital technologies in the campus environment, aligning with goals such as resilience, sustainability, smart campus, and diversity and inclusion.
  • Additionally, it seeks to develop an intelligent campus environment, promoting the university’s digital transformation goals. This year marks the initiative’s first year, with a primary focus on the digital campus. Planned projects, including Campus Genius, have been executed, showing initial success and establishing a solid digital transformation and governance foundation. Plans include continuously developing innovative projects to serve students, faculty, staff, alums, and the wider community.
  • This year’s Digital Campus Achievements Exhibition will be held on campus for four consecutive days, allowing students, faculty, and the public to understand this often unseen digital infrastructure better. The exhibition showcases NYCU’s achievement of creating an intelligent campus through artificial intelligence, with a dedicated focus on achieving environmental sustainability and net-zero carbon emissions.
