Hosting a “High School Semiconductor Popular Science Summer Camp” to lead students into the field of semiconductors.

2024-07-04

In response to Kaohsiung City’s “National Key Areas Intercollegiate Research and Education Park” plan, the Southern Alumni Association of National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) held a “High School Semiconductor Popular Science Summer Camp” at Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology from July 1 to 2, 2024. Thirty-seven high school students were selected to participate, and after two days of semiconductor popular science courses, a graduation ceremony was held on July 2 to award outstanding students.

Wu Wen-Jing, Deputy Director of the Kaohsiung City Government Education Bureau, stated in her speech that the NYCU Semiconductor Popular Science Summer Camp introduces high school students to the semiconductor field through popular science courses. It is a highly valuable course for campus promotion. The Education Bureau plans to combine universities, high schools, and industries in various forms of cooperation to nurture, train, and retain talent, allowing more young students to build their future in Kaohsiung.

NYCU Professor Wen Kuei-Ann guided students from the basics, including programming, to gradually understand semiconductors. A second-year student from Kaohsiung High School, surnamed Chen, mentioned that he had been looking forward to this course for a long time, applied early, and was lucky to be selected. He learned a lot about the semiconductor field through the course. Another second-year student from Kaohsiung Industrial High School, surnamed Liu, said the course was fun and interesting, starting from basic programming, which helped them understand the semiconductor popular science course. Participating in this activity was very rewarding.

This event marked the first time NYCU chose to hold the camp in Kaohsiung, sharing the benefits of semiconductor development. The camp selected 37 high school students to participate, filling all available spots. Professors and teaching assistants from NYCU’s Department of Electrical Engineering and the Institute of Electronics, who have collaborated with TSMC for many years, brought popular science courses to the participating students.

NYCU is actively promoting AI semiconductor education for all, pioneering a new era of education. Supported by leading companies like TSMC, Synopsys, Himax Technologies, and schools like Hsinchu Girls’ High School, Hsinchu High School, Hsinchu Science Park Experimental High School, and Zhubei High School, the AI and Semiconductor Education for All (AS-EFA) alliance was established. This alliance, in line with the needs of the technology industry, gathers resources from industry, government, and academia to jointly promote the AS-EFA platform for AI semiconductor awareness.

NYCU President Lin Chi-hung stated that the semiconductor industry is the cornerstone of the AI industry. With the advent of the AI era, it is a critical moment for Taiwan to develop AI. Technology education should not be limited to higher education but should become a nationwide movement and a highlight policy. The enthusiastic response to the NYCU Southern Alumni Association’s Semiconductor Popular Science Camp demonstrates the desire to collaborate with the people of Kaohsiung to jointly improve public literacy and share the future prospects of AI and semiconductor development.

Kaohsiung City is actively promoting higher education and recently announced that NYCU and National Tsing Hua University will establish branches in Kaohsiung, which has been approved by the central government. It is expected to enhance the teaching and research of the entire Research and Education Park, industry-academia cooperation, and further studies, with the total number of people expected to exceed 4,000.
