In recent years, NYCU has actively added solar power generation equipment, expanded its energy infrastructure, replaced older, more energy-consuming equipment, and supplemented it with a smart energy management system to increase energy efficiency and provide modern and sustainable energy services. It has also purchased energy-saving and carbon-reducing products to create a sustainable green campus.
- The Yangming Campus achieves its energy conservation and environmental protection goals by minimizing power and water consumption on the campus, including:
- The Yangming Campus installs solar photovoltaic power generation equipment from energy companies on roofs to increase the generation of green energy. In addition to independently supplying electricity demand and reducing CO2 emissions, installing photovoltaic renewable energy can achieve roof insulation and cooling effects, reduce air-conditioning power consumption, save energy, and realize on-site energy education.
- In recent years, to strengthen the promotion of energy conservation and increase energy efficiency, old energy-consuming equipment has been replaced. For example, the replacement of traditional induction-motor elevators with green and environmentally friendly permanent-magnet synchronous motor elevators (including power regeneration devices), which can save energy by more than 40%, traditional lighting fixtures replaced with LED lamps, saving 30%–60%, traditional fixed-frequency water coolers replaced by variable frequency or high-energy-saving magnetic levitation, and the split air conditioners (window type) improved to high-EER environmental protection or energy-saving label air-conditioning, saving about 20–25%, which also has a sleep setting function. Traditional motors for cooling water towers and air-conditioning water pumps are improved to variable frequency models, saving about 20–25%.
- Finish installing digital electric meters in each first-level teaching unit, supplemented with a smart energy management system, to effectively control the electricity consumption, space, and energy-consuming equipment of each college, to be used as a guide for implementing energy-saving measures.
- The Chiaotung Campus improved its technology infrastructure to provide modern and sustainable energy services, including:
- Installing solar photovoltaic equipment in the Boai Campus and Tainan Campus (1194.14kWp), and 300kWp in Hsinchu’s Guangfu Campus. The total capacity of power generation equipment across the three campuses is 1494.14kWp. An estimated 1.875 million kWh of electricity can be saved annually, which can significantly reduce carbon emissions by about 3,385 metric tons.
- In terms of energy-saving management, the large energy-consuming buildings have implemented the ISO/CNS 50001 energy management system; and the University energy management committee has been established to implement the building electricity fee-sharing mechanism based on the user payment concept which will improve energy efficiency and reduce energy waste by about 10–15%. In terms of hardware, the ESCOs energy-saving performance assurance project has been introduced. The energy savings from implementing this project is 25–50%. Also, it has earned the diamond green building designation. It has also prepared an annual budget to replace outdated and high-energy-consuming equipment, such as replacing traditional lighting fixtures with LED lamps, replacing old air conditioners, pumps, and general elevators with variable frequency and energy-saving models, and planning and designing IT server rooms with separate hot and cold aisles. All newly-built buildings have obtained green building or smart building designation according to the law, and statistics and analysis of the energy consumption of each building are continuously obtained.
- Purchasing designated procurement items, giving priority to purchasing products with environmental protection labels, and reporting on actually procured items, their amounts, and label number on the Green Living Information Platform. Promote the usage of environmentally friendly products and respond to energy conservation and carbon reduction. NYCU achievement score for 2021 is 95.57 points.
