NYCU joins hands with the New Taipei City Government and clinical physicians to establish medical education and bring new learning opportunities to high school students

National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University is promoting the “University/High-school Collaboration On Online-learning (UHCOOL)” project (or the UHCOOL project) nationwide, bringing together universities, county and city governments, the industry, and high schools to jointly design and produce digital teaching materials suitable for high schools for diversified electives or in-depth and extensive learning for teachers to use in the classroom, enriching their teaching resources, and establishing a cross-school, cross-sector, and cross-domain teaching cooperation model for university teachers, high school teachers, and industry teachers to use digital learning platforms to create sustainable development and expansion.

Recently, Yang Ming Chiao Tung University and the New Taipei City Government have jointly launched the “Introduction to Medicine” course, hoping to introduce the course into New Taipei City’s high schools as a diversified elective course in 2025, to help high school students recognize the knowledge and skills required to study medicine early, understand various professional fields related to medicine (such as public health, medical technology, pharmacy, etc.), encourage young students in New Taipei City to set their goals in a professional career that helps people and benefits the world, and lay the foundation for the cultivation of future medical talents.

Today (27th), Yang Ming National Chiao Tung University and the New Taipei City Government officially launched the project together at the humanities space of the university’s School of Medicine, bringing together university professors, doctors and high school teachers to carry out curriculum design, lesson plan planning, exchange of opinions and consultation. This project collaboration will be an important milestone, marking the joint efforts of industry, government and academia to use digital learning platforms for cross-school preparation and course sharing, so that medical education, which was originally purely at the higher education stage, can be expanded through online learning to cross-school, cross-border and cross-domain high school teaching cooperation, so that high school students across the country will have the opportunity to learn about professional fields, industry practices and future trends introduced by university teachers, industry experts and high school teachers in school, effectively providing high school students with an interest in exploring medicine and attracting future medical talents to invest in related fields.

The “Introduction to Medicine” course invites universities, clinical physicians, and many seed teachers selected from high schools to participate in course design and consultation. Yang Ming Chiao Tung University takes the lead in planning online learning content, recording teaching videos, and producing teaching materials and online activity lesson plans; the New Taipei City Department of Education organizes high school and vocational school teachers under its jurisdiction to participate in course design, introduce online course resources into teaching, and form a teaching co-construction community. The Introduction to Medicine course is expected to provide at least 20 hours of complete teaching videos and supporting teaching materials. Yang Ming Chiao Tung University will build a dedicated online course area and teacher online interactive area on the Ewant open education platform for the school , and provide teaching training and other support, promote the course to various high schools and vocational schools, support the needs of offering diverse courses, and realize the sharing of high-quality learning resources.

Dean of Academic Affairs of Yang Ming Jiao Tong University, Chen Yongsheng, added: “This cooperation program will bring rich learning opportunities to high school students and high school teachers, and strengthen the connection between high school and university. Director Zhang Yongjia of the Yangming Jiaotong University Higher Education Open Resources Research Center said: In the past, only a few college students had the opportunity to access formal medical education. The center specially invited medical teachers on campus to provide consultation, continuously provide more learning resources and opportunities for high school students, and strengthen the partnership between universities, high schools, industry, and county and municipal governments. We look forward to seeing this plan have a positive impact on future medical education and professional development. Deputy Director Chen Qiangren further explained: This virtual and real integrated teaching model not only encourages domestic universities and colleges to give full play to their school characteristics, but also actively invites local governments to join the ranks of cooperative promotion. Through the “University and High School Co-creation Online Learning Project”, we have launched courses in emerging fields such as “Generative Artificial Intelligence”, “Introduction to Semiconductor Principles and Manufacturing”, “Introduction to Financial Technology”, “Electric Vehicles and Sustainable Energy”, “Design Thinking”, and “Digital Humanities”, providing high schools with more exciting digital learning resources that are in line with future trends in addition to the required courses.
