In 2020, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) held its first Summer Online School (SOS) program, which offered 20 engaging online courses from each of its colleges to up to 2,165 students. Among them, 540 students were high school graduates and prospective university students. The academic credits earned through the SOS program are recognized by 43 universities and colleges. An end-of-term survey revealed that 90% of the students were satisfied or very satisfied with the overall program; 92% indicated that relative to in-class general education courses, they were just as or even more attentive during the online courses.
The SOS program made a grand return in 2021 when Taiwan’s pandemic alert status was increased to Level 3. This year, 54 universities and colleges joined the SOS program and recognized its course credits.
NYCU stated that the SOS program offers summer general education courses that are fully online. Online classes and exams are conducted using the ewant open education platform, which is operated by NYCU and allows student to learn safely anywhere anytime.
This year’s SOS program offers more than 400 courses from multiple universities and colleges, of which 37 are designated as recommended online general education credit-earning courses. The courses cover a wide range of disciplines, including information technology, natural sciences, management, physics, the humanities, psychology, and foreign languages, and they are expected to meet most students’ requirements.
