Friendly and safe pedestrian spaces

2021-11-26

Renovations are being carried out on Chin Chu Avenue of Guangfu campus to provide barrier-free access between pedestrian spaces on campus by creating sheltered areas and walking spaces that boast both comfort and leisure. This is part of the university’s efforts to build safe pedestrian-friendly spaces and improve the aesthetical qualities of the campus. The scope of the project covers the base along 250 m of the two core roads and the surrounding open spaces. Renovations are also scheduled for the Chuhsuan Dormitory pedestrian path and bulletin board (approximately 50 m); the area scheduled for renovation spans almost 2,400 m2.

Furthermore, in accordance with the university’s philosophy of ecological symbiosis, community harmony, and creating pedestrian-friendly spaces, the university is allocating part of its campus to the Hsinchu City Government for use in urban pedestrian space planning. After the suggestions of local residents and university teachers and students were consolidated, the university’s plans are as follows:

  1. Tingfu Canal Promenade: Approximately 143 m of road fence will be demolished from the Bo’Ai campus, and this will open up 2,500 m2 of campus space to the neighboring community. This project also involves the opening up of the canal, reorganization of barrier-free spaces, and the establishment of a walking path that will link six schools to create a 1.4-km green corridor in the city.
  2. Jian Gong Primary School Promenade: The school is pulling back the wall that surrounds Jian Gong Primary School’s teachers’ dormitory to install a 245-m pedestrian path with a 6-m width. The path will be repaved to adjust for elevation and provide accessibility to all pedestrians; multiple layers of flora will also be planted along the path. The pedestrian paths inside the Jian Gong teachers’ dormitory will be redone to feature 40 m2 of wooden decks and sandboxes to create a sense of home and belonging.
